Why I'm not excited about the PSP2
After yesterday's piece, an awful lot of very irritable fanboy types have been angrily demanding to know what my problem is with the PSP2. I rather thought the feature had explained that in some detail, but I appreciate that kids today have very limited attention spans, so in short, it's essentially this:
(Image to scale. The NGP is also exactly twice as thick as the iPhone.)
If I want to play games on the move, I want a machine I don't need a luggage trolley to carry around (especially once I've added a phone and a camera). And if I want to play PS3-type games, I have a PS3.

Pic reminds me of a mastersystem game boxart.
January 28, 2011 at 12:08 pm
You were so quick to criticise games journalists for "sucking" yesterday, yet here you are today thieving images from Kotaku with no credit. Well done you.
January 28, 2011 at 12:09 pm
The big wow about the original PSP was the huge colour screen in an era when not many consumer devices had one. These days? Not so much.
January 28, 2011 at 12:19 pm
"yet here you are today thieving images from Kotaku with no credit. "
Except for the one on the picture caption where it says "Original larger pic by Kotaku", numbnuts.
January 28, 2011 at 12:55 pm
Not exactly obvious, mind, unless you hover over the image. Which many tend not to do.
But still, size is a problem, or so I hear people say (cries inside)
At this level of unwieldiness, they just need the batteries to only last an hour or so and they're close to recreating the Atari Lynx…
January 28, 2011 at 1:02 pm
A credit is a credit, man. (Besides, what bit of that image does Kotaku actually own anyway? Not the pic of the NGP, not the pic of the iPhone, none of the words and almost certainly not the font. Maybe, just maybe, they drew the grid background themselves, but I doubt it. And the red arrow is all my own work.)

It's your own fault. You will insist on detailed, well reasoned arguments with a mild sprinkling of humour, when all people want is to believe the hype and read the tech list as they bend over and let Sony fuck them up the arse.
January 29, 2011 at 12:33 am
Ah, the ol' after-the-fact, oh-it's-been-there-all-along modification of alt text. The fix won't show up in before/after screen-caps. Well played, Rev Stu, well played.
January 29, 2011 at 12:50 am
Oh, grow the fuck up. It was there all along. Cached versions of the page will show it in their source if you're really such a twat.
January 29, 2011 at 1:38 am
I can happily confirm it was there from the start. I always hover my pointer over the pictures here to see what pops up, and so should everyone else; if you don't, you can sometimes miss out on some pleasing bonus gags.
January 29, 2011 at 9:44 am
NGP: 182mm long x 83.56mm high
Wii: 225.6mm long x 55.4mm high
It's getting up there. You'll be wanting a shoulder bag for it.
January 29, 2011 at 12:08 pm
oh, the ol' check-your-google-cash, you-will-see-that-i-am-honest defense. like anyone has the tech know-how or patience to sift through their google cash. well played, rev stu, well played.
January 29, 2011 at 5:04 pm
also your analysis appears to focus on the unit's footprint. you have apparently not considered whether, depth-wise, it is thin enough to at least equal the volume of the iphone. guessing, it would then have to be about a half-a-centimeter thick, but i think that sony, the greatest developer of machines, games, and gaming consoles of all history, can manage a 500-mm-thick console. with total PS3 capability. and marketing under £350, which as we in britain's most sucessful foreign enterprise would put it, $555.
January 29, 2011 at 5:05 pm
oh shizen, sorry if i'm not up to speed with my non-imperials. i think i meant 5mm.
January 29, 2011 at 7:48 pm
"you have apparently not considered whether, depth-wise, it is thin enough to at least equal the volume of the iphone"
What, apart from the line immediately under the picture where I say "it's exactly twice as thick as the iPhone"? I suppose I've added that after the fact now too, right? Although to be honest, your last post is so mental I have to assume you’re being ironic by this point.
January 29, 2011 at 7:56 pm
yeah because 'thick', when applied to a handheld, has a consistent meaning. i am sorry if i didn't realize that the z-axis is the common "thickness" axis.
January 29, 2011 at 8:05 pm
Yeah, you're just trolling, given that the image already shows the other two axes, to scale, and there'd obviously therefore be no need to mention either of those as an “also” in the text. Begone, troll.
January 29, 2011 at 8:42 pm
You are such a moron, I am weighing the possibilities of explaining to you what a moron you are (which would require many paragraphs of text), or just maintaining a casual animosity (which might compel you to ban my IP from visiting or commenting on you rwebsite). I will keep you posted as to my determination in this regard.
January 29, 2011 at 8:56 pm
Plus, your analysis doesn't allow for the clear fact that Sony is the greatest developer of video games in all history. They are like Miyamoto, raised to the Miyazaki'th degree, designing a console around a coherent idea of taking the elements that have made previous games great, and putting all those elements together in a huge orgy of unoriginal ideas! As is the case with all Nintendo consoles, I am sure that they designed the Neo Geo Pocket or the wonderswan or whatever Sony is calling it in the interest of gameplay functionality. How do I know that? I love Sony enough to keep faith in their respect for gamers.
January 29, 2011 at 9:34 pm
This is another joke article. For a portable gaming device with that much power it is not much larger than the original PSP. I think this is the only device in the foreseeable future that will appeal to a large audience including the hardcore gamer The whole point of the device is to be portable…why is it even relevant to say you would rather play your PS3 for the graphics? Are you going to take it wherever you go? If so it is tad bit bigger that the NGP.
January 29, 2011 at 9:58 pm
Also, up is down. Anyone who disagrees is CLEARLY SATAN.
January 30, 2011 at 11:47 am
what an idiot this guy is. its your live for the iphone and all things apple is clearly evident and disturbing! If u dont want one, jus shut yr trap, no one wants to hear from someone who is just a critic! You obviously have played games on the iphone/pad/touch and then u will know that there is no REAL gaming on those machines. I mean sure, angry birds was a bit of fun but, how can you compare that to GTA, GOW, Killzone, Drake and other games that will be making their way to the NGP! U say its too large to carry around? What about that ipad? U talk absolutely NO sense!!
January 30, 2011 at 1:19 pm
Your comparison to the iPhone is irrelevant. The iPhone is a phone/media device, not a dedicated gaming device, let alone one on par with the PS3. If I want to play utterly retarded touch screen games, sure, I'll whip out the iPhone. If I want to take a device on holiday, or to my parents, or wherever, that plays console quality games, I will take the NGP.
January 30, 2011 at 1:20 pm
And you can rest assured I don't try to stuff everything in my pockets when I travel. I tend to use bags.
January 30, 2011 at 4:15 pm
"I mean sure, angry birds was a bit of fun but, how can you compare that to GTA, GOW, Killzone, Drake and other games that will be making their way to the NGP!"
Because I don't give the remotest glimmer of a shit about anything on that list of boring, pathologically-unsuited-to-mobile-gaming games?
January 30, 2011 at 10:28 pm
'no one wants to hear from someone who is just a critic!'
Huh? Yes, people clearly do. You're an odd bunny.
January 30, 2011 at 10:50 pm
He believes in a future where every opinion expressed by a corporation is truthful and good, and they want to sell us everything for as little money as possible, and for the general good of humanity as a whole. Hence, no need for critics.
Unfortunately, Sony have already been caught in one or two tiny lies already, SO YOU'D HAVE TO BE REALLY NAIVE TO BELIEVE THE SAME SHIT ALL OVER AGAIN.
January 31, 2011 at 12:34 am
NGP = Nintendo Got Pwned
January 31, 2011 at 12:50 am
that is the most retarded reason yet not to want the psp2 i've heard so far. are you mad it won't fit in your skinny hipster pants?
January 31, 2011 at 5:32 am
the ipod/iphone sometimes suffers from being 'too' small. small screen, controls integrated into the view screen or tilting of view screen instead of said controls. however nothing that i can see can compete with the ease and affordability of the app store, apples strongest card in it's deck.
was wondering if you could comment on the possible ramifications on gaming of new mac app store that has just been recently launched. it seems to me that the laptop/desktop and the ipod/iphone are two very different animals being treated in a similar manner. computers have larger screens and better control options but lack portability. some of the games on the new mac app store seem like cheap 'fun' flash games that you can find for free on the net. ipod gaming makes sense to me as a time-killing function whilst waiting for public transport, doctors appointments, airlines etc. paying 6-12 dollars (aus) on the similar games for my home computer doesn't seem to make sense.
ps. to patrick, troll harder
January 31, 2011 at 7:57 am
Viewers! Note that today is a school day, so things should calm down considerably from here.
January 31, 2011 at 12:01 pm
"I think this is the only device in the foreseeable future that will appeal to a large audience including the hardcore gamer"
The PSP already tried this.
January 31, 2011 at 4:34 pm
To be fair if its anything like the PS3, Sony will probably disable the only useful features of the NGP in firmware updates and spurious piracy deterrants.
Until I see someone has got homebrew running on this then i'm in the not bothered category.
January 31, 2011 at 6:31 pm
As the prior comment pointed out, unless i see homebrew running on it and an affordable price, i won't even going to look at it.
What is it with portable gaming nowadays? If the prices go near a home console and need to be charged every now and then, what's the point? I mostly use my PSP as an emulator and, occasionally, to play PSP games.
January 31, 2011 at 10:41 pm
After buying an ipod touch last year, I've decided that size isn't just a big factor in a handheld gaming device, it's the single most important factor.
I can still (barely) convince myself to spend the price of a dozen iphone games on a DS cartridge from the bargain bin, but then I never end up actually taking the damn thing out with me. The iTouch is so small and generally useful that I'll usually have it with me and can just pull it out and start playing something at a moment's notice.
February 1, 2011 at 12:01 pm
To be honest, I'd have to agree with others here and say that the PSP2 clearly packs an awful lot more punch than a mere iPhone for gaming purposes, yet is still clearly portable. In car terms, it's like comparing a Focus RS with a bog standard Fiesta; the latter's smaller but also a good deal 'shitter' to boot.
Regardless, I'm so getting one – if only for the next (hoped for) Ridge Racer instalment, being the sad old twat that I am. I don't care.
February 1, 2011 at 12:16 pm
I don't think anyone has ever disputed its power. My feature certainly doesn't.
